Getting notified about approval for an SBA loan (like a SBA 7(a) Loan Program or SBA 504 Loan Program) isn’t tied to a single universal timeline—it depends a lot on the lender and how complex your application is. But here’s what typically happens:
1. Initial lender decision (1–3 weeks)
-
After you submit your full application, your bank or lender reviews it.
-
If everything looks good, they issue a conditional approval (sometimes called a “term sheet” or “letter of intent”).
2. SBA review (a few days to 2+ weeks)
-
For many loans, the lender sends your application to the U.S. Small Business Administration for final authorization.
-
Some lenders have “Preferred Lender Program (PLP)” status, which lets them approve loans faster without waiting as long for SBA sign-off.
3. Final approval + closing (1–3 weeks)
-
Once approved, you’ll get official notification—usually via email or phone from your lender.
-
Then comes underwriting, document signing, and funding.
So when do you actually hear back?
-
Best case: about 1–2 weeks
-
Typical: 3–6 weeks
-
Slower cases: 2–3 months
What “approval notification” looks like
-
You’ll usually first hear: “You’ve been approved pending conditions”
-
Final approval comes after all documents are verified
-
Funds are released shortly after closing
